“On the Cover”: Evening Tones, an oil-on-canvas painting by Oscar Bluemner (1867–1938), is an abstract depiction of part of the Hudson River, which flows through the state of New York. The original painting can be seen in the North Wing of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.; it is part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum Collection, which features more works by Bluemner and by thousands of other artists.
