1. The Blues: Grammar and Glossary

   This is the last of a four-part series on the American musical style called “Blues.” The music grew out of the musical traditions of African slaves in the United States between 1619 and 1863, blended with the musical styles of Europe. It is closely related to Jazz. Blues and Jazz are the only two completely unique musical styles created in the United States. This section, as the title suggests, explains the words used in discussing the Blues and music in general, for example the use of “Blues” to mean more than just a color.

   This lesson in Teaching Pragmatics aims to raise awareness of and give practice in using strategies of relexicalisation for descriptive accounts and for promoting solidarity in short interactions. A sub-goal is to provide students with interesting and natural vehicles for vocabulary development, recycling and revision.

4. The Lighter Side

   There are two games in this issue. “Sights in the City: A Word Puzzle” is for high intermediate or advanced students who are familiar with tourist attractions in the United States. Clues about landmarks and their locations are provided, as are “hangman” type blanks to cue the number of letters in the answer. The second game is “Urban Renewal: A Word Search Puzzle.”

6. Picture This – In a Minute

   In a Minute provides students with practice forming questions that begin with wh- words: who, what, when, where, why, and how. First, players read and respond to the six ques­tions on a Picture This card. Then players race to write as many questions as they can in a set amount of time. This game works best in small groups.

   Mix It, Fix It! allows students to practice creating well-formed questions. This game works best in small groups.

8. Guess What? - Mime the Words

   In Mime the Words, the Describer is allowed to say the topic and nothing else. Instead, the Describer must describe the words on the Guess What? card using mime.
