English Access Microscholarship Program

Learner Perspectives

When Gustavo Monroy of Mexico heard of the Access Program, he never thought he would qualify.

“I remember when I first heard about the programs of the Embassy,” says Gustavo. “It was for me something remote, unattainable. Then a school teacher told me I would compete for a scholarship in English and computer skills. I was extremely excited. This would be the place of the first generation of a program called English Access Microscholarship.”

“Access taught me a language so important to this globalized world. Now more than ever, it is indispensable to have English language skills because the majority of books, articles, diagrams, films, laboratory equipment, computer programs, etc. are in English. Access allowed me to increase my knowledge in areas such as biology, where currently I am preparing myself to compete with students from the world in the International Biology Olympiad.”

“Access has been the most useful tool in my life, because it not only allowed me to visit a great country—the United States—but also to have contact with other cultures in a respectful, peaceful and above all friendly way. English was and is the language that unites us.”

I thank the Embassy of the United States for giving me the opportunity to discover new horizons, to share with my classmates and let them see the importance and amount of benefits that they can have if they learn English.

“I want to share with other Access students a tip: we must give our full potential, the greater results come when effort and dedication are present. The best of Access is not during the course, it´s after. It is when you face the world. Many have gone further than they thought because someone thought they could, and Access believes in you.”
