Mr. Hananto, English as a Foreign Language Lecturer, Indonesia
Teacher Perspectives
Mr. Hananto, a researcher and lecturer in the Lippo Village of Tangerang, Indonesia, has been teaching English for 25 years.
“I am a lecturer at the English Education Department,” explains Mr. Hananto. “We prepare our students to be English teachers in Indonesia. My roles include designing vocabulary courseware for our students and conducting English teaching research. My teaching goals are to help our first year students have vocabulary knowledge and help the fourth year students do their final project/research, i.e. writing their thesis.”
Mr. Hananto loves to interact with students, colleagues, lecturers and researchers from various Indonesian universities. He regularly uses a host of resources from the American English website to teach his students.
“I like the publications with downloadable content,” says Mr. Hananto, “especially the American Literature such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”
“The stories are interesting and the texts are suitable for my low-intermediate level students. I use the material as supplementary exercises to encourage autonomous vocabulary learning. I have given the link of the website and asked my students to read the stories and to listen to the audio files at the same time so that they know the pronunciation of the words.”
Mr. Hananto has been so inspired by the resources available through American English, he has created a template for his students to use to learn difficult English words. “I created EVE (Excellent Vocabulary Exercises), a template in Excel for my students to make a vocabulary notebook of the words they don’t know.”
Through the American English website, Mr. Hananto has been able to offer his students the best and most updated English learning materials available. Together, Mr. Hananto and American English are opening a whole new world of understanding to his students.
