Through the Office of English Language Programs and the English Access Microscholarship Program, students from all over the world participated in poetry writing to celebrate National Poetry Month last April. Three of the poems were then made into songs by U.S. Department of State’s Regional English Language Officer Kevin McCaughey. Here are the three poems and their corresponding songs. Tell us what you think on AE Facebook.

Life

Life is like a ball
When it spins around
Because it has its up
Side down

Life is like a rabbit
Because it is too fast.
It is like a sand of a glass
Because it has its own limits

Life is like a donkey
It is rough

LIFE

My Parrot

I have a parrot
My parrot likes carrot
The vegetable carrot
Is favorite of my parrot
Parrot, ohho, my parrot
My parrot has voice
Its voice is nice
Parrot ohho my parrot
My parrot has a nest
Its nest is in the west
My parrot is nearest of my heart
My parrot is part of my heart

My Life

My life is like the rain
Where I drop on everyone
My life is like a bird where
I let myself fly free
My life is like a sea where
I let the jewels of fish swim inside me
My life is like a sea
Where I let people fish to produce food!

LIMPOPO

Limpopo my Province with beautiful people
Limpopo you have a beautiful buildings, shops and hospitals
Limpopo the Eden of South Africa
Limpopo my Province
We have schools where we get education
The schools are beautiful because of you
You have many departments
The premier's, local government, health and forestry and others
They all make us communities to live together
You give our grannies money to support us Limpopo
You take care of the orphans
Above all you give us education for free
I love you my Province Limpopo.

MY VILLAGE-BLOODRIVER

A village with no peace, joy and laughter
My spirit tightens as my heart beats
When I see people dying everyday
When parents wail because of gangsters
My heart is pounding as I learned that a 12 year old beats up his parents
Bloodriver
A village with blood everywhere
Parents spending sleepless nights
Worried about their children going to clubs and taverns to lull their brains with alcohol

Love your neighbours and they will love you
The wise man once said;
A person is a person because of other people

My village Bloodriver
Youngsters live telling themselves that; kill or be killed;
Will there ever be peace in my village?
I am yearning for it
Let us live like ordinary people in this village.

LIMPOPO

Limpopo our Province
The province of peace and harmony
The home of beauty and brightness
The province of calmness
A mother to the beautiful people
I am rich to be born in Limpopo

For birds sings for me
Clear blue sky and the sun shines for me
How lucky i am to be born in Limpopo
The province of purity.

My admiration

How beautiful this place is
Like treasures in the case
And sunny summer day
Has a lot of happy faces

This flower is so pretty
This lake is very nice
You'll never forget this place
If you see it only once

The City Poem

Happy faces, beautiful faces.
People are shouting, music plays loudly.
Taxis honking, builders banging.

These are busy city noises.
Businesses running, Ice-cream shop looks nice and cool,
Ice-cream taste sweet and delicious.

You see new pretty faces. Cellphones ringing,
People singing.
You will never know who you will meet.

M'bambatt (Wrestling)

Every night we lit fire in the middle of Dîngîral,
Around which gather all the youth of the village.
Form groups of wrestlers.
Each group doing a good allowance, seeing reward.
Are also attended by young girls.
Wrestlers “ndaalas' “are colorful.
Strong supporters cheer
Before the fight, each group boasts show sits strength
Sketch rhythmic dance steps on the rhythm of drums.
Matches torsos wrestlers are dotted.
Each wrestler believes detain the best marabout, remains hopeful of winning.
As congratulations, we chanted banners,
Scarves followed by yells.
Wrestling is a sport, not only it hardens the body
But it also brings unites young people.

Dîngîral (Campground)

A starry night head to the campground
Girls in ebony skins
Well trained breast
Refreshing smiles
The ivory teeth well tidy
With flat breasts
With wide hips
They form a circle
At the end of which
One of them is sitting there
Bathtub beneath her feet
She beats by lifting in a jiffy
Draped in their beautiful clothes
The other girls cheering in unison.
Shortly after tears up the air a melodious voice
And other together repeat
Then they make inputs on stage
Two by two, in a rhythmic pace
And the boys eagerly devouring eyes
Each dances, demonstrates, torpedoes hips as she can.
When silence or calm gives way to noise and brainstorming household,
The lovebirds meet, exchange rings and ideas.
The lover teaches the flower of his soul
To adopt good habits throughout life
Everyone enriches and learns from the other
Such as studious students eager to learn
In front of stories, riddles and puzzles
They are all ears
At daybreak boys and girls disperse
Like dead leaves scattered in the village
And are preparing to go to the very joyfully fields.

The Call Beyond the Sea

There is another land beyond this sea, Mother.
There is, I know.
I can hear its sirens screaming
into my ears.
I can feel the touch of steel and gold,
marble, and silver.
I can see its rising mountains
of condominiums and skyscrapers.
I can hear its call, I can hear its call.
This sea would not be a barricade,
This sea will bar me not
to venture into that land beyond.
That rich land is the reality
of my dreams, Mother,
the concreteness of my visions.
I could be who I am.
I will listen to the call.
I will listen to the call.
So, let me ride on the vessel
whose sails will take me there,
to that land beyond this sea, Mother.
I can be who I am
In that land beyond this sea.

Nation

My nation will get its right
If we will not fight
If you know your nation
You can make it a heaven
Your one wrong step can destroy the nation
Your one right step can make the nation
We can change our nation
With a new dimension
If we make our nation happy
We can make the whole world happy
My nation will get its right
If we will not fight

Motherland

I want to behold the beauty of Bengal sitting on the mat of grass,
I want to hear the whisper of breeze and the chirping of little birds.

I want to enjoy the golden wave on the arid land of ripe paddy,
I want to see the always shy veiled Bengal lady.

I want to see the little fireflies sparkling in the dark night,
I want to bath in the soft, luminous moonlight.

I want to behold my Bengal, I want to see my motherland,
She is the beauty in my eyes, she is ever grand.

COLORS

A red rose warmly wrapped my dream
A blue butterfly blew a bright beam
A green glow hugged my golden heart
A yellow yacht yearned to make a start
A purple pen poured all my pain
A brown brush begged it to wane

A white wing waved on a cloud
I'm a queen without a crown
The kingdom of colors is my hometown

Life

Why does life has to be so cruel?
Why life has many ups and downs?
Why when you try to fix your mistake it changes the question?

Why life has to be difficult?
Why do life has good and bad people?
Why does life have things that can harm or comfort you?

The word life is simple to say
But difficult to live it
Why sometime life makes
The people you love the most
Leave you?
Life, life, life
Something that makes us live in life
Something that we can’t leave without

 Time

Safe time safe life
Time is money
Every second lost costs
Time scare time wasted never regain
Earlier come best gain.
Early bird catches the fattest worm
Procrastinators waste time
Procrastination is the thief of time
Time managed time protected
Safe time safe life
Time, time, time and time

Lead your life

Lead your life or allow it to lead you
Build your dreams or allow them to shape you
Love yourself or allow it to step on you
Trigger and create or follow and imitate
Predict and plan or be driven by the winds
Draw on every second and make it count or kill yourself by killing time away
Be your own Bernardshaw or be Bernashawed

Life Has Roots

He who says past is past is a liar
A dormant volcano hides fire
Memories are there; they never expire
Their resurrection rejuvenates all desire
To make of you a dreamer and a lofty aspirer
Past, Present, Future are but a circuit with no wire

by Chaouki from Tunisia

Luck!

Luck never happens luckily
It has a well-defined itinerary
To reach a target immediately
It may pass by you airily
And if you are a bit lucky
You can grab a puff so quickly
Otherwise, you will lament its fatality

by Chaouki

Rise!

Ups and downs nurture life
Patience and endurance help you survive
Never know when life can supply or deprive
Jumping into despair is a futile dive
Why not refrain and derive?
Seek your potentials to contrive
Original ways to strive
Against balks all along your drive
Never lose hope, but thrive
Till life gives you five!

by Chaouki from Tunisia

The soul oxygen

Being free to think, to dream when hovering
This is the true happiness for all writers,
Being free to play, to run or dance
This is, oh yes, the true joy of all kids
Being free to choose one’s religion
This is the freedom of mind
Being free to live one’s passion
This is what makes the heart in full emotion
Always be free but never forget dignity, sincerity and honesty

Life is name of sharing

Life is name of sharing
It’s the name of bearing
Yes we face suffering
There is no way to fight
Lord has given this pride
To help the humanity and feel pride
We should respect humanity
We should believe in equality

SUCCESS

Today’s failure may show success tomorrow
Today’s setback may not stop the river’s flow
So you must find your success
Embrace your success
When you hold success
You must keep it save
When you have success
You must share it
Success may not end with your goal
You need more and more to find it.

by Hok from Cambodia

What you see is what you get

"what you see is what you get
people trapped on the net
getting money as a debt
feeling sorry and regret
they're right and life's low
story starting time ago
like filming a movie show
white pigeon seeming a crow
fighting over humans rights
being chosen as good knights
knowing who's starting fights
giving us some nasty bites
i don't know even what to say
hurting like a tooth decay
get your cards and go replay
we have nothing just to pray "

by Ameni from Access Tunisia

Dear Life

Dear life, why do you play hard to get?
Do you remember the first time we met?
I cried as soon as I took my first breath
Since I didn’t know anything, I just accepted you
I had no choice except walking step by step with you
The first step was innocence, the second was reality
The third was dream, the fourth was difficulty
The fifth was hope, the sixth was responsibility
The seventh was hesitation, the eighth was certainty
The ninth step is still a mystery
After all you fooled me; you set all the steps before me
You were just watching what would happen to me
But now I will take the lead, and choose happiness as my one and only step

Poem About Life

Life is like garden
Which is full of flower
It gives us a pleasure
Life can be for nation

Life is like a sun
Some time it rises and
Sometime it sets
But gives result for what is done

Life beautiful and pure

Life beautiful and pure in your way of being
Always surprising
Sometimes calm and quiet as the morning breeze
Sometimes turbulent as the waters of the ocean
And learning is eternal
Causing us to take lessons
Of deepest pains, we face
Or of the worst mistakes committed
And sometimes giving us immense joy
By things so simple
This is the life
That makes us go by unimaginable ways
Without knowing the right course to get
And what find the front
Simply beautiful and surprising,
In your essence

My life is like winter

My life is like winter, because it’s very cold and angry
My life is like zebra, because it’s two lines black and white.
My life is like sun, because is always light.
My life is like a flower, because its blossoms.

My life is like a spring

My life is like a spring, because I feel a greenness in it.
My life is like a bird, because anytime it can be end and flies to another world.
My life is like a light, because it always bright.
My life is like an examination, because I am sometimes lucky and sometimes I am not.

Life is His, His, Whose, Whose.

It’s a very hot day!
I can’t hear what you say.
Walking on the road alone,
I have nothing to mourn.
Everyone is so busy around me,
There is no time for them to see.
His, his, whose, whose! Nowadays!
Nothing to do, everybody says.

I taste hamburgers and cheeseburgers.
I think my dream will come true soon in future.

Believe

Believe that life is good
And be sure that you’ll have:
Happiness and good mood ,
And all things that you want.
Believe that your dreams will come true
It doesn’t matter how they are
Just think about what you want to do
And you’ll obtain it, I swear.
Believe that love exists
And be sure that you’ll find it
Make everything to keep it,
‘Cause this feeling is a gift.
Believe in what you want to be
And it will realize, you’ll see
But never let your dream to be destroyed
‘Cause your life will be annoyed.
Believe in yourself
And never give up
Remember-you’re the best
And never make it stop.

Be Strong

How to be when your heart is beating?
How to be when you have a feeling?
When all around you go wrong,
The only way to be is to be strong.
How to learn to tell a word?
How to learn to hear what we want?
When all around you go wrong,
The only thing to learn is to be strong.
How to start a better day?
How to start to find your way?
When all around you go wrong,
The only thing to start is to be strong.
How to do your dream to become true?
How to do your goal to have a clue?
When all around you go wrong,
The only thing to do is to be strong.

A Dialogue…

-What do you feel now?
-I can’t say…
-Is it love or just a wish?
-I can’t say…
-Are you crying?
-Yes, I am…
-Why?
-Maybe because I can’t understand…
-What can’t you understand?
-Why the life behaves so with us?
-How?
-  It lets us to cry when we have a pain in our hearts
It makes us to cry even if there is no reason for…
It makes to beat two hearts
When it chooses the door.
It makes us to smile
When the pain doesn’t leave our soul
And we want to scream for a mile
And we have no way to go.
It makes us to believe
When there is no chance
And everything we give
Is like a reverence.

A Nice Dream

I saw a dream that I was in the moon
It was a yellow ball, where a rabbit smiles and calls
“Hi, my friend come close to me”
When I was floating
Everywhere was cool
Lots of stars were shining
Like a bright and blue school.
And I saw a strange thing
A pretty angel was coming
That I’ve never seen
The wand in her hand is shining
She whisper me softly
Son, you are rightful today
Then I woke up energetically
To survive the day!

The Morning

The moon is setting, the sun is shining.
The clouds are saying in the sky,
“Let’s start the day”.

The wind is blowing, the birds are flying.
The flowers are saying,
“Let’s add beauty to the day”.

The stream is drifting
The fish are playing
The angels are wishing
“Be a peaceful day”

The animals are gamboling
The children are caroling, and
Everyone is saying!
“What a pleasant day!”

For the poem, “My Dream”

If I were a flower,
I'm in your sight
You will feel light and delight
And I will clear all your plight.
The fragrance I emit;
If you happen to breathe it,
You will feel just like eating the nectar
Which can make your feeling fresher.
We, young people,
Are just like flowers in the garden.
We have a mission called
Creating a better world!
I'll surely take part
In the nation building task,
A must I must do.
This is my humble desire
Which I will carry out in the near future

Me or Nothing

I wish I can walk on the moon
I wish I become wealthy, famous and graduate very soon
I’d like to get everything for free
And have a room with money is up to the knee
I want to own a brand new house and a big car, new piano and the latest guitar
Live happily, just like a star
I dream for being the topic of the media and the news
I’d love to be the example all the fans would choose
I will lead this world and take it all; I will be out of control
I got a genius brain with a particular sign; I can even better than Einstein.

I Wish

I wish
I can…

picture the enigmas

I wish
I can...
I can practice
Practice to open the eye
The eye of heart than physical
The eye of vision than sight
The eye of care than ego-centrism
The eye of worry than desire
I wish…
I can

When the Leaves Turn Green

When the leaves turn green,
Sets love and thirst in the spirits
And bit by bit the breeder’s breeds broaden
Softened will be the air we breathe.

Global have gone values!
In the new horizon snooze new opportunities
Reform, not! Transform, yes!

Open now the true door
For the world to enter.

Start A Journey

Kill your fears
And wipe your tears.
Open your eyes
To see where the truth lies.
You can’t be blind
As long as you have a mind.
Keep a positive attitude,
Fill your heart with gratitude.
With love and tolerance,
With faith and confidence.
Dive deep in your soul,
And start a journey to your goal.

Is there a sign? A word?
Or is everything blurred?
Never mind!
Persevere and you’ll find
A guiding light
That’ll make your path bright
Follow your dream
However far it may seem
One day you’ll be there
But never forget to share
Be for others a shining smile
Their pain will fade in a while

About My Future…

My future, I think, will be happy.
My future, I think, will be good.
I will be strong, clever and healthy.

I will destroy the pressure,
I will grow my own respect!

Soon Coming Spring

Good morning, native land!
Did you sleep well this night?
What have you seen while you slept?
The sweetest dream, am I right?

I have seen the coming spring,
Which was wandering near the town?
Flying on the lightest wings,
Going and going around.

It got warmer at the moment
It got bright, fresh and clean.
We will see if I was right
About the soon coming spring.

The Future of our Civilization…

We have much pollution,
We make wrong solutions,
We don’t want to regret,
How we live, what we spend,
We do not understand:
Are we good or bad?
We just used only one-
To destroy everyone!
And we don’t want to thing:
How to change everything?

My Future

Future is something
That we can explain
Use our imagination
And take it to plan
Make our target
Go forward to it
Take all information
That makes us profit
In future, I hope
All of us will be friends
Who will help in the moment
When we will need them
We reach our goals and
We meet our love
And the best thing that happens
Is our family life
I believe everything that I’ve written
Will come true
And will give us a lot of happiness too

Just Hope

I had a dream I was a king
I wake up still king
I saw the fingers inside a ring
and on my legs were some bee’s stings
I flew away as the darkness follows
I can’t even scream how terrifying it swallows
A torch of hope was coming from within
Water falls from the sky to wash our sins
But again war is spread all over the universe
Human beings, nature and even animals
Though we must always hope for a better day
Cross your fingers and pray
Don’t worry there is always a way
That’s when I wake up and light’s surrounding me
Everybody’s happy the it the he and the she
This is our earth in the 22nd century
Just hope
For the best and you’ll see

A Dream

Like a bird;
Soaring near the horizon,
So it flies.
Like the skies;
Without boundaries,
So it extends
Like a song;
Deep in the heart of man,
The tune of it,
Only comprehensible,
By the one who sings it
So is a dream,
Hidden within a man’s soul

They come and go
They raise and fall
They take you up
They take you down

Or drop and drag you to opium

Child Labor

My young child! Don’t cry
You can do, if you try
My young child! It will be alright
You tears will dry and you will get your right
No one can ever explain you “why?”

Peace brings freedom that we crave
From great stress, it will save
One main thing, it does assure
We’ll feel at ease and secure

Justice something must protect
Peace brings us tranquility
Along with much needed stability
Sense of quiet good will
Peace is serene and very still

Chess as Content

Dear teacher,
Focusing solely on structure and form
Brings no good but a storm
That drowns learners' motivation
Suffocates any form of inspiration
Increases inhibition and frustration
Impedes language learning progress
Causes failure to perform and express
Oneself in target language with success

Dear teacher,
Think of first language acquisition
Its environment and conditions
Create similar situations and context
To enable learners acquire at best
Integrate language and content instruction
Prompt interaction and meaning construction
Develop interpersonal language competency
Along with cognitive academic proficiency

Dear teacher,
Apart from academic subjects as content
Recreation is an area of interest
Among learners' hobbies I made my quest
As leisure activities incite them to do best
Hey! The most optimal I can suggest
Promote target language through chess
As it is fun and free from stress
So rich that vouches for learning progress

Dear teacher,
Chess is an optimal tool
For the effective learning goal
Gives learners mastery and control
To learn the language as a whole
Through integration and experience
Total Physical Response and graphics
Cooperative and task-based learning
A journey from low to high order thinking

Dear teacher,
Nothing to fear, just give it a go
Here are some tips you may follow
Through L1 teach them how
Get your ducks in a row
Then switch to L2 and start the show
Enhance what they already saw
Introduce what they didn't know
And use interference when doing so

yesterday did not care to learn a language that is thought to decipher impossilvel
an opportunity emerged for me or I gave
my destination, I was chosen
accepted for the course

Today, I am finally understanding English
I realized that I open doors
I know now that I can follow different paths, and that's because I have more knowledge.
tomorrow will not be seizing what ower or learned today
maybe tomorrow I'll be in the U.S.A or elsewhere
and because it completely mastered the English and I can go wherever I want
tomorrow I'll be willing to learn more and more.

Be An Interactive Teacher

Dear teacher,
It's the early twenty-first century
Time to check your teaching inventory
So as to adapt a rich variety
Of classroom roles to share the territory
With learners and afford them mastery
Of their own learning and discovery

Dear teacher,
Say adieu to autocracy and welcome democracy
Overwhelm learners with much interest and courtesy
Create classroom dynamics with great efficiency
And perform an array of roles with high proficiency
To empower learners to achieve the intended competency
And use the target language with accuracy and fluency

Dear teacher,
Get rid of the ways you were taught
To get off to a flying start
Facilitate learning and avoid learning by heart
No more prevailing instructions, use directions instead
Make your guidance and assistance a work of art
And make the learning on student's part

Dear teacher,
We live in the information technology age
Time to be a tech-savvy to update your page
And time for learners to take the stage
Forget about being the only source of knowledge
And create productive learning environments to engage
Learners to develop skills needed in the workplace
